Chemistry students from Binghamton University made a special visit to Mr. Hamlin's sixth grade science classes at Jennie F. Snapp on June 7.

Both undergrad and doctoral candidate students stopped by to help reinforce previous lessons the students learned in their weather and water unit. The students explored a density column and connected it to what they have learned about the layers of the atmosphere. The sixth graders dabbled in some chemistry as well learning about cobalt complexes and how they are used in humidity testing. Finally, the students learned about a water purification process known as P&G Water Packet Technology, which will save millions of lives around the world. This amazing process can quickly turn 10 liters of dirty, toxic water into clean and safe drinking water with just one little packet!
Both the sixth graders and the students from Binghamton University had a fun-filled day of science. Thank you BU! |

George F. Johnson Elementary had a special visitor on June 4, Miss New York 2012 Shannon Oliver thanks to the efforts of fifth grade student Colleen Denmon.

Miss New York and Colleen Denmon
She made it her mission to raise enough money to invite Miss New York - Shannon Oliver - to bring her anti-bullying message to the school. Oliver, a trained diversity educator, travels around the state teaching students the importance of accepting their peers as unique individuals, rather than as members of a stereotyped demographic.
Denmon held a bottle drive on May 13 and also received support from the Union-Endicott Education Foundation and the GFJ Parent-Teacher Association. |
